James Mtume movidos pelo estilo Urban Contemporary e funk no final dos anos 70 tornou - se um dos mais bem sucedidos produtores e intérpretes em ambos os estilos durante os anos 80. O filho do grande Jazz saxofonista Jimmy Heath, Mtume foi um granmde produtor e percussionista. Seu primeiro álbum foi lançado em 1977 e foi intitulado "Rebirth Cycle". No ano seguinte veio 'Kiss Goodbye This World ", que continha a versão original de "The Closer I Get To You", mais tarde virou um sucesso de Roberta Flack e Donny Hathaway. Em 1980 Mtume assinou com a Epic e passou a escrever e produzir com Reggie Lucas. Woody Cunningham é um talentoso baterista e vocalista, foi o líder da banda Kleeer, para quem ele produziu e cantou algumas músicas clássicas entre elas "Intimate Connection" Com base em soul, discoteca, e funk. Woody Cunningham começou em 1971 como baterista e vocal do grupo Four Choice. G. L. O., formado por Meshack e Sharnell Murray de 18 anos. Vejam as coisas boas da vida, Sharnell Murray foi descoberta enquanto trabalhava num verão na mesma empresa onde Meshack trabalhava, Um colega de Meshack's a ouviu cantar nos corredores. Ele disse Meshack sobre ela, que logo providenciou um almoço audição na sala de reuniões e Meshack foi imediatamente afastado do emprego, Mas G.L.O.O foi criado pouco depois.
